Are you suffering from feelings of depression, anxiety or stress? Are you struggling to get on with your spouse and wondering whether your marriage can be saved? Are you trapped in a cycle of helplessness and despair, fighting to hold on to hope and break out of your vicious cycle? When you reach out for help, it is not always easy to know where to turn. When you look to your pastor, you may find that he is too busy to give you the time you need, or not trained in counseling. When looking for a professional counselor or therapist, however, most of your options will likely not be offering Christian counseling.
Many people ask me whether they really need to find a Christian counselor. After all, if you have a problem with your heart, you don’t need a Christian surgeon. However, therapy is very different from other parts of medicine, because while one treats the body the other treats the soul. In order to leave behind a life of suffering and achieve a truly happy Christian life, choosing Christian counseling is essential.
One of the most important reasons you need to choose Christian counseling is to make sure that the therapy you receive is compatible with Christian values and scriptural teaching. Many, probably most, therapists in America have a personal belief system that is very far from what is taught in the Bible. Even many of those who personally believe in Biblical Christianity are trained to separate their faith from their work and conduct therapy from a purely humanistic perspective.
Secular therapy is based on premises that are incompatible with true Christian faith. Humanistic psychology believes in the principle of ‘enlightened self-interest’ and self-esteem, but scripture tells us that we should be absolutely obedient to God and dedicated to others. Secular therapists are trained to help you find happiness by identifying your desires and finding strategies to fulfill them, but God has taught us that pursuing our own desires is the way to desolation. Your therapist may genuinely believe that by encouraging you to indulge ‘in moderation’ in activities that distance you from God they are helping you. By choosing Christian counseling, you ensure that you will be getting therapy that helps you not only lead a functional and balanced life, but a Christian life too.
Therapy based on the word of God
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Even if you find a secular therapist who respects and understands your desire to live your life in accordance with scripture, if you are not having Christian counseling you will be missing out on crucial elements. Psychology has made many advances over the past hundred years, but it is limited by the humanistic view of man upon which it is based. Mainstream psychology does not and cannot acknowledge the existence of the soul or a spiritual reality. It is also ignorant of fundamental truths about the nature of mankind that are taught in scripture and are universally true. With each passing decade, the American Psychiatric Association changes its mind, often on fundamental issues, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. However, the word of God stands forever.
For therapy to be truly effective it needs to be based not only on sound psychological principles, but also sound scriptural principles defining who you are and what is good for you. By working from these secure foundations, you can not only leave behind feelings of anxiety or depression, but learn to lead a truly blessed life, filled with the love and fear of God.
